The free thing most Kelowna businesses are wasting

Your Google Business Profile does more work than your website on a lot of days. Most owners set it up once in 2019 and never opened it again.

Somebody in Kelowna is looking for what you sell right now. They are not on your website. They are looking at a map with three businesses on it.

That box is the whole game for local work, and most owners here treat it like a formality they dealt with once.

How much traffic is actually in there

46% of Google searches now carry local intent (Digital Applied, 2026). Searches for "near me now" are up 150% and "open now" is up 200%.

The top three map results take roughly 44% of all local clicks. Fourth place might as well be page two.

And these are not browsers. 76% of people who run a local search visit a business within 24 hours, and 28% of those searches end in a purchase the same day. Somebody searching "plumber Kelowna" at 8am is not researching. They have a problem today.

What actually moves you up

Google is trying to answer one question. Which of these is closest, most relevant and most trusted right now.

You cannot change where you are. You can change the other two.

Categories. Your primary category does more than anything else on the profile. Pick the most specific one that is true. "Roofing contractor" beats "contractor". Then add the secondary categories you actually do.

Services, written out. Every service you offer, listed individually, with a real description. Not a link to your website. The text has to live on the profile.

Photos, recently. Google favours profiles that look alive. A business that last uploaded a photo in 2021 reads as closed. Ten minutes on a Friday, actual jobs, actual staff.

Hours that are correct. Including the stat holidays. Nothing burns goodwill like a drive across town to a locked door.

Businesses that manage all of this get 67% more profile views and 43% more website clicks than ones sitting on defaults. That is the same profile with somebody paying attention to it.

Questions and answers is the free win

Almost nobody uses this. You can post questions on your own profile and answer them yourself.

Take the five things customers ask you on the phone every week. Do you do emergency calls. Do you charge for quotes. Do you cover West Kelowna. Post them, answer them properly.

You have now answered the objection before the call, and given Google a pile of real text about what you do.

Reviews are a ranking factor

Review volume and recency both feed the local ranking. A business with 40 reviews where the newest is two years old looks worse than one with 15 from this quarter.

There is a whole separate conversation about what to do when a bad one lands, and it matters more than most owners think. We wrote that one up separately.

Where your website still comes in

The profile gets you seen. The site closes.

When they tap through, they arrive on your homepage with a specific question already in their head. If the answer is not visible in five seconds, they go back to the map and try the next name.

When we audited 267 Kelowna business websites, half had no enquiry form on the homepage and a quarter had no tappable phone number. So the profile did its job and the website dropped the ball. The full audit is here.

Twenty minutes, this week

  1. Check your primary category is the most specific true one.
  2. List every service with real text on the profile itself.
  3. Upload five photos from a recent job.
  4. Post five questions you get on the phone, and answer them.
  5. Fix your holiday hours for the rest of the year.

None of that costs anything. It is the highest paid twenty minutes available to a local business, and almost nobody spends it.

Common questions

How important is a Google Business Profile for a Kelowna business?

For local service work it often matters more than the website. 46% of Google searches carry local intent in 2026, and the top three map results take about 44% of local clicks. Most people never scroll past that box.

How do I rank higher in the Google map results?

Google weighs distance, relevance and prominence. You cannot change distance. You improve relevance with a specific primary category and fully written service descriptions, and prominence with recent reviews and photos.

Do reviews affect my Google ranking or just my reputation?

Both. Volume and recency feed the local ranking. Fifteen reviews from this quarter generally do more for you than forty where the newest is two years old.

Do I still need a website if my Google profile is good?

Yes. The profile gets you found, the website closes the sale. In our audit of 267 Kelowna sites, half had no enquiry form on the homepage, so the profile delivered the visitor and the site lost them.
