Half of Kelowna business websites give you no way to get in touch

We audited 267 of them in August 2026. Here is what is actually broken, and which fixes are worth your afternoon.

We went through 267 business websites in Kelowna and the Okanagan in August 2026. Dentists, roofers, plumbers, law firms, restaurants, clinics, contractors. Real businesses with real customers.

We were not looking for design opinions. We checked things that either work or do not. Can you tap the phone number. Is there a form. Does the page load. Does Google have anything to describe you with.

The results were worse than we expected, and better news than they sound. Most of what is broken is cheap to fix.

Half of them have no form on the homepage

132 of the 262 sites that loaded properly had no enquiry form on the homepage. That is 50%.

Another 129 published no email address at all on the page we checked. So for roughly half the businesses in this valley, a customer who lands on the homepage at nine at night has exactly one option. Phone you tomorrow.

Some of them will. Most will go back to the search results and try the next name down.

The fix. Four fields. Name, phone, what they need, and a message box. It lands in the inbox someone already checks. That is the whole job, and it takes an afternoon.

A quarter of them cannot be phoned with a tap

65 sites showed a phone number as plain text with no tel link behind it. On a phone, that means copying the digits by hand.

This one bothers me most because the customer is already sold. They found you, they read enough, they want to call. And the site makes them work for it.

If you run a trade, this is the single highest value ten minutes on your website. Someone standing in a flooding basement is not going to transcribe your number.

38% would arrive as a blank grey box

99 of the sites had no social share image set. When someone sends your link in a text, an email or a Facebook message, it shows up as a bare address with no picture and no description.

That matters more than it sounds in a town this size. Most local business still moves by recommendation. Every one of those shares is a neighbour vouching for you, and right now a third of them land looking like a broken link.

One image, sized 1200 by 630, set once. It then works on every share forever.

Speed is mostly fine here, until it is not

This surprised us. The median time to first byte across the audit was 0.32 seconds, which is genuinely good.

But 44 sites took over a second before anything started arriving, and 12 took more than two and a half. On a phone on mobile data, two and a half seconds of blank screen is where people leave.

If your site is in that group it is almost never the design. It is the hosting. Moving is cheaper than redesigning.

Five sites did not load at all

Of the 267 we checked, five failed outright. One had no DNS record left, which means the domain had stopped resolving entirely. That business is still trading. Its website simply is not there, and as far as we could tell nobody had told them.

If you have not opened your own website on your phone this month, do it now. It takes twenty seconds and it is the cheapest check on this list.

What we would fix first

In order, by how much it returns for the time it costs.

  1. Make the phone tappable. Ten minutes. Highest return of anything here.
  2. Put a short form on the homepage. An afternoon. Catches everyone who will not phone.
  3. Set a share image. An hour. Fixes every future recommendation.
  4. Write a real page description. An hour. It is the sentence Google shows under your name.
  5. Check your load time. If it is over a second, the fix is hosting, not design.

None of that is a rebuild. If your site is fundamentally sound, this list is a week of small jobs and you keep everything you have.

If it is not sound, you will know, because you will have been avoiding looking at it.

Common questions

How many Kelowna business websites did you audit?

267 business websites across Kelowna and the Okanagan in August 2026. 262 of them responded normally. The set covered dental, trades, legal, hospitality, retail, clinics and contracting.

What was the most common problem?

No enquiry form on the homepage. 132 of the 262 working sites had none, which is 50%. Close behind, 129 published no email address anywhere on the page we checked.

Is a slow website really costing me customers in Kelowna?

For most local sites, no. The median time to first byte in our audit was 0.32 seconds. But 44 sites took over a second and 12 took over two and a half, and those are losing people before the page appears.

Do I need a full rebuild to fix these things?

Usually not. A tappable phone number, a homepage form, a share image and a real page description are roughly a week of small jobs. A rebuild is only worth it when the structure itself is working against you.
