Ask an assistant for a plumber in Kelowna and it will name two or three. It will not show you ten blue links. It picks, and then it moves on.
That is a different game to ranking. You are not competing for a position any more. You are competing to be the sentence it repeats.
Here is what we have found actually moves that, including from auditing 267 local sites.
Say the thing plainly, in one sentence
An assistant lifts passages. It needs a sentence that still makes sense with everything around it removed.
"We pride ourselves on quality workmanship" survives nothing. "We install standing seam metal roofs in Kelowna, West Kelowna and Lake Country, starting around $9,800" survives being pulled out and quoted, because it carries the service, the place and the number in one line.
Write like you are answering a question, because you are.
Structured data is missing on a fifth of local sites
50 of the 262 working sites in our audit had no structured data at all. That is 19%.
Structured data is a small block of code that states, in a format machines read without guessing, what you are called, where you are, what you do, when you open and what you charge. It is not a ranking trick. It removes ambiguity.
If a machine has to infer your opening hours from a photo of a sign, it will get it wrong or skip you.
12% have nothing to be summarised with
31 sites had no meta description. That is the sentence a search engine shows under your name, and it is often the first thing a model reads about you.
Leave it blank and something gets generated from whatever text happens to be near the top of your page. We have seen businesses summarised by their cookie banner.
Publish the numbers nobody else will
This is the part most owners resist and it is the most effective thing on this page.
When we researched pricing across 26 Okanagan agencies, 16 published no pricing at all. That pattern repeats in most local trades. Everyone says call for a quote.
Which means the moment you publish a real range, you are the only one an assistant can actually answer with. It has a number from you and nothing from everyone else. Guess whose name comes up.
Same for your service area. "We cover Kelowna, West Kelowna, Lake Country and Peachland" is a fact a machine can match against "near me". "Serving the Okanagan and surrounding areas" is not.
Let the crawlers in
Some sites block AI crawlers, sometimes without the owner knowing, because a plugin or a security setting did it by default. During our audit we hit a few Kelowna businesses whose sites returned a challenge page to anything that was not a human browser.
If you have decided to block them on purpose, fine. If it happened to you by accident, you have opted out of the fastest growing way people find local businesses.
What to do this week
- Write one plain sentence that names what you do, where you do it, and roughly what it costs. Put it near the top of your homepage.
- Add local business structured data. Name, address, phone, hours, service area.
- Write real page descriptions. One per page, in your own words.
- List your service area as actual place names. Not "and surrounding areas".
- Check your robots file is not quietly blocking assistants.
None of this is exotic. It is mostly writing down things you already know and would say on the phone in ten seconds.
Common questions
What is the difference between SEO and getting named by AI?
Search engines rank a list and let the reader choose. An assistant picks two or three and answers. So the goal shifts from holding a position to writing sentences plain enough to be lifted and quoted accurately.
Does publishing my prices really help?
It is the strongest single move we have seen. When we checked 26 Okanagan web agencies, 16 published no pricing at all. When almost nobody publishes a number, the business that does becomes the only one an assistant can answer with.
How many Kelowna sites are missing structured data?
50 of the 262 working sites in our August 2026 audit had none, which is 19%. A further 31 had no meta description, so there was no written summary for a search engine or an assistant to use.
Do I need a new website for this?
No. Structured data, page descriptions, a stated service area and a plain opening sentence can all be added to a site you already have. A rebuild only helps if the site is slow or the structure is fighting you.
